Synopsis (Spoiler-Free): The novel tells the story of the Vignes twin sisters, inseparable as children, who grow up in a small, southern Black community. After running away from home at age sixteen, their lives diverge dramatically. Years later, one sister lives with her Black daughter in the same town she once tried to escape, while the other secretly passes as white, her white husband and daughter knowing nothing of her past. Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined.

Why We Chose It: This book resonates deeply with the values of The Nia Collective. It is a profound exploration of identity, family, heritage, and the secrets that shape our lives. Bennett's storytelling is both epic and intimate, asking powerful questions about who we are and what we owe to our past.
